School Tours

Each year during the legislative session thousands of students visit the Vermont State House in Montpelier. History comes to life as students question members of the Vermont General Assembly, participate in committee hearings, tour the collection of portraits and paintings, and learn from their tour directors about the remarkable stories the State House holds within! Those students fortunate enough to be introduced to the General Assembly from the gallery are left with a memory for a lifetime regarding civic pride and participatory government.

Early scheduling is important because the State House can only accommodate 100 students a day from January through late spring while the legislature is sitting. School tours MUST be scheduled in advance. The school coordinator is Alice Merrill. Phone (802) 828-1411 to reach her voice mail, or email amerrill@leg.state.vt.us where you should indicate your return number as well as a brief description of possible dates and needs. In an emergency, phone the Sgt.-at-Arms office (802) 828-2228. Your tour can be tailored to specific interests, student needs, and grade level. Only students in or above 4th grade are allowed to tour and observe the legislature in session. Students below fourth grade can be welcomed on Mondays, but still need to make arrangements in advance. The tours are free. Tours are conducted by trained, experienced tour guides who enjoy working with students. Each tour group should comprise only about 20 students, but if your school wishes to send a larger group, it will be divided into separate tours led by separate guides. Teachers and chaperones must accompany each group at all times and in all places visited. Advance arrangements may be made for lunch in the cafeteria, but student lunches are not to be eaten between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Eighth grade students are encouraged to learn about the Legislative Page program.
